1 [mass noun] the condition that distinguishes animals and plants from inorganic matter, including the capacity for growth, reproduction, functional activity, and continual change preceding death

2 the existence of an individual human being or animal

The shape and existence is the biggest argument that many people believe reality, because she can use many senses to feel that. Neurology has proved some virtually presented can generate reality perception in human brain. The left argument is reality accepted most of the people ,or generally accepted. So we don't need to argue that, but if shape is a kind of assembly of data, which can be reflected by general light. Molecules(also information directed) with rules results the physical world we experience, but still information.

If all things has its identity, then life or not life will be questioned though both have their self-identities. Life things may engage several levels of rules working together, not just lower scale of laws.

Life and death are the pair things that explored by many philosophers and scientists. The key thing inside these pair is the definition. If we have a clear understanding about information vesicle, then we can understand that the rules inside a vesicle means life, the dissipation of rules then means death.
