“Me Neuron” may change the view of neurology

Isaac Mao

Summary: It’s very hot to research connectome to find out the fundamental mechanism of neuron network to intelligence. It would be a very complex and challenging job with many exquisite findings. However, I may still argue that there could some barriers to applying only reductionism to this expedition. We may need some serious talk on the philosophy of human being. Will there be some neuron assemblies being identified as “Me” in our brain? IF so, or very possible from my analysis, Me Neuron could be the ultimate difference between human and animal. If some can be proved, It will be very important to understand perceptions, especially consciousness about feeling oneself, or direct the whole conscious procedures.

Keywords: Neuron, Conscious, Me, Ego, Memory, Dream

Animals don’t have conscious. They don’t know who they are, why they are there, or What they want to do? They just follow instincts, its same to human being’s basic hehaviors including sex ones.

Freud talks on "Me", "Ego", "Super Ego". But he is far from understanding the linkage between neurology and psychology. So do we today. We tell human being differentiate from animals, but how and why, we don’t really get it.

There were big surprises when some researchers(?) found some neuron assembly may represent a concept, an object or even a person in our brain. For example, Jennifer Aniston, was selected as the person in the papper. If there are neuron assembly on Jennifer Aniston, why won't there be "Me" neurons?

Me Neurons is just a hypothesis here. But I think it’s very possible to reside somewhere physically in human brain. From evolution, we can find some anatomical change from animal to human, adding more cortex(?). Not only there, there are some new structures may help human step out from other animals.

“Me Neuron” could be very useful to help understand the behaviors of neuron network. If it’s well connected with many other neuron assemblies, it would be very easy to explain consciousness, perception, memory, space/time, etc. There could be very intensive connections between “me” and other neuron circuits so it’s very easy trigger “me” to other events, or perceptions from senses.

“Me Neurons” can be regarded as the headquarter of the brain, but actually it make decisions or wills based on all other surrounding neurons. As we know, although “me” may have strong will part, it depends on the many other parts of information to express its will, orally or mentally.

Since “me” is related to consciousness. The sleeping “me” will be totally different. That part of “Me” could only perceive from randomly active neurons via random circuits to itself. Some scenarios will be still alive along the circuit even “Me” wakes up. Freud can record such dreams just be the densest “me” keep flowing.

Different people may have different complexity of “Me Neuron” which means more varieties within individuals.

“Me neuron” may explain “free will” dilemma as well. If we have such functional part, we could understand that “will” made by “me” may be able to be detected. From this, the experiments of Libet experiment can be explained better. But apart from this explanation, we definitely need more in depth investigation on which part could be it’s pre-assemblies to be assistive on will making.

Will there be discovery of “Me Neuron” someday? I would guess very possible with the connectome project, or if we look deeper into brain activities maps.

Hebb's rule

From Hebbian view, if “Fire together then wire together”, then there must be some intermediate neurons between two events-related neurons. In this case, the Neuron Me should be existing to link together these two events without costing them physical barriers
