Blogging in Berkeley
I'm now blogging on CNBlog's English blog, I will update the conference of "China' s digitla future" time by time there.

Can't update Chinese blog
I forgot to synchronize the data file to laptop before leaving Shanghai. So I can't update my Chinese blog in a regular way. The English blog is not affected since it's a blogger.com site. Anyway, blogger.com supports more mobilities in this case.

Berkely arrived

I was picked up by Wangfeng, student of Journalism School of UC Berkely at SFO. After lunch talking with Xiaoqiang, Director of China Internet Center, I just returned to hotel to make some preparations for further events. Now I'm accessing a "free wireless" in near Berkeley, in a small but beautiful hotel. I like FREE stuffs, :D

IBM teams with Stanford University on spintronics
ZDNet, "IBM and Stanford University on Monday will announce a joint effort to conduct further research into spintronics, a technology that one day could lead to computers that could start working as soon as the power comes on or rapid fire digital cameras. "

Cool. It's a technology I dreamed of before.

Some sites can't be accessed here

I can't visit Misbehaving.net and Business 2.0 site with local wire. They could be the new sacrifice of GreatFirewall blocking. Anyone has the same experience?

'Virgin birth' mammal rewrites rules of biology
New Scientist Reports on a scientific breakthrough that's getting a lot of attention today: researchers in Japan have managed to create, for the first time, a mammal without a father. Scientists led by Tomohiro Kono at the Tokyo University of Agriculture were able to create a mouse, called Kaguya, by combining the genetic material of two egg cells. The article details the work, discusses imprinting in general, and says while it will have an impact on "fields from fundamental embryology to assisted reproduction and even cloning" it likely won't be directly applicable to humans.

NY Times: China Agrees to Postpone Wireless Plan. China agreed on Wednesday to give up a plan to impose its own standard for wireless technology, essentially agreeing to join the rest of the world rather than dividing it up.

Many bloggers in China talked about this change in their blogs, via Grassland (the RSS search engine of Chinese blogsphere). Some of them even called the government "No Persistence At All".

A critical vulnerability, affecting multiple vendors, has been identified in the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) used for Internet connections, mainly routing infrastructure including networked operating systems and network equipment. However, experts say the problem is being corrected and isn't that big of a deal. ---- [New Scientist]

Patrick Delaney on bloggercon Shanghai: "Zuo Guanxi- Making connections"

"bloggerCon Shanghai had some connectivity problems. The hook up with Ha-ha-harvard didn't work and, more annoyingly, neither did the wireless for most of the laptops in the room. Nevertheless, a fun event, very informal and unpretentious. "--- [HomoLudens]

Ha, Pat, forgot to say thanks for your beer.

Disaster in Southwest China, Again
From many sources, more than 150,000 people in Chongqing were forced to evacuate their homes on Friday after a chemical plant spewed toxic chlorine gas into the air. And it reports that over 9 people died till the reporting time.

Last December, there was a similar accident in the same city(suburb Chongqing) caused by natural gas digging. 234 died in that case.

Lindows Becomes Linspire
"Following Microsoft's round-the-world attempts (and some successes) to ban the name Lindows - combined with the unsuccessful attempt at using the Lin---s name instead, it appears that Lindows has settled on Linspire as their new name. Of course, in the end, they'll probably privately thank Microsoft for giving them so much publicity to get their name out there. Yet another case where trying to shut something down probably gave it a lot more attention. "----[TechDirt]

Tim Berners Lee Rewarded

Yahoo News(Reuter News), "World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee won one million euros ($1.23 million) on Thursday, the largest single amount of money he has made from an invention that has made many others very rich. "

Yes, Web is the biggest Open Source program in human's history. Tim chose openess instead of proprietary, thus we can all get benefits from this free culture today. Congratulations and salute, Tim!

10 beautiful places in China

I wonder if the photos are the original works of the blogger. So just provide a link to them. via [cnbruce]

Some places are really worth exploring.

More Phone Number Insanity

"The latest news is that the phone number 135 8585 8585 has been sold for $1.1 million. According to the article, the pronunciation of the phone number could be loosely translated into "let me be rich be rich be rich be rich." Of course, one would have to be rich to spend $1.1 million on a phone number - and you have to wonder how much longer someone who throws money away like that will remain wealthy. " ---- [via TechDirt]

Why those stories are all happened on Chinese? It's because there are really many cases of such "One-night-rich" syndrome in China, as well the norms of mass media has been lost for years. Take a look at one of the hottest news site(news.sina.com.cn), about half of the news titles are such bull shits.

Seven Chinese kidnapped in Iraq are freed

Reuter, "China's official Xinhua news agency said on Tuesday seven Chinese had been freed." .

File Sharing Against Censorship
via [TechDirt]
"....So now, more people are starting to look at ways to use file sharing as a news delivery system that is much more difficult to block than typical file sharing. This isn't all that new, but making such programs easier to use would go a long way towards getting this to work. In fact, why not combine the concept with a news aggregator of some kind, so that the news you're reading is automatically available to everyone else using the software. "

It's a feasible way, indeed. Actually, we are designing such system, namely Wego(codename).

MSDN Channel 9, a Microsoft stuff by some talents there. They know sth. about openess, as well RSS, however, it's still so MS-style. I never tried to listen Ch9 on a flight(I'm afraid there is such service on domestic airlines in China), did you?

CNBlog.org now has a English face

The "Blog on Blog" now has an English Edition. Thanks to Wenxin and Zheng.

CNBlog.org, founded in 2002. "Blog on blog" on cnblog.org is the very first window introduce blog related information to Chinese people from every perspective, synchronizing the development with English blogsphere . Since then, more and more blog hosting services emerged in China, mass media as well academic researchers also pay a lot of attention on this new genre of web application. And obviously, including government. :)

babelfish can't be accessed here

Babelfish provides bi-directional translation service to both texts and web sites. Thus it can be used as a way to visit blocked web sites bypass Great Firewall(Just like bloglines for blocked Blogs). However, it's easy to be shot, too. Now, it seems that the service is blocked too (fortunetely, another similar service worldlingo is still alive).

Also I wonder what's happened to MSNBC(argued by MS?), it's now re-accessible in China. Is that becoming a power balance game about China's censorship. Well, poor grassroots, can you feel that?

MSNBC can't be accessed from China
Another news site, MSNBC, can't be accessed from here in Shanghai since last week. I wonder what's triggered this banning as I thought MSNBC is relative tolerant by BJ than BBC, CNN, etc.
